9/7/2015 – Lost Hiker

SAR Staff, Hasty Team, SVU, and WCSAR responded to the Mira Loma area in southeast Reno on the report of two lost hikers on Rattlesnake Mountain. Further information placed the subjects in the mountains east of Hidden Valley, so staging was moved to the dirt section of Mira Loma, behind Rattlesnake Mountain. Cell phone pings were used to locate the subjects (which turned out to be only one subject), but he kept moving. SAR teams finally caught up with him and guided him safely down to Hidden Valley Park.

9/6/2015 – Disabled Boat

The SVU, staged at Pyramid Lake for the weekend, responded to a 911 call for assistance from a disabled pontoon boat with eight subjects aboard, including an infant. The subjects were able to give a fairly good description of their location – about five miles north of Pelican Point, and one mile off the beach. A SVU rescue boat located the disabled boat approximately three miles off shore, and towed them safely back to Pelican Dock.

9/5/2015 – Lost Hikers

SAR Staff, Hasty Team, SVU, and WCSAR began responding to the Thomas Creek trailhead to search for two subjects that were hiking the Rim to Reno trail, but misjudged the amount of time it would take. They also ran out of power with their cell phone, which was being used for navigation. As teams were arriving in the area, the subjects were located by a patrol deputy near the wilderness boundary on the Thomas Creek Road.

9/4/2015 – Lost Hikers

SAR Staff, Hasty Team, SVU, and WCSAR responded to both the Thunderbird Lodge area, and the entrance to Marlette Lake off of Hwy. 28 to search for two hikers that were lost somewhere in the Marlette area. Locating them through cell phone pings was hampered by the fact that their 911 calls were not going to the Washoe County dispatch center. SAR Staff used coordinates from the subjects phone to guide foot teams to the location. Foot teams were able to locate the subjects by voice contact, and they were escorted to staging.

8/29/2015 – Overdue Ranchers

SAR Staff, Air Squadron, Hasty, SVU, and WCSAR staged approximately 40 miles north of Gerlach on CR34 to search for two overdue ranchers. Early possible locations were sketchy, so a team was used to check the Limbo Rd. area before they reached Gerlach. Teams checked many possible areas off of SR447 and CR34 before some better information was received from friends of the missing subjects. Teams were redirected to the area the ranchers had grazing rights for, with the belief that they were checking fence lines. While teams were checking the area, the Air Squadron was flying over High Rock Canyon, and spotted a disabled truck with its hood up. One subject (the father) was with the vehicle, and was waving for help. Coordinates were given, and a ground team arrived at the location approximately one hour later. The subject was medically fine, but the truck had experienced a broken tie rod, and was not movable. One of the subjects (the son) started walking out of the canyon at 0630 in the morning, heading to Soldier Meadows Ranch. While the father was being transported out of the canyon, the son was located with friends in a vehicle coming into the canyon. The father and son were reunited and all returned to the staging area.
