Specialized Vehicle Unit

The Specialized Vehicle Unit came into existence in 1996, utilizing ATV’s, boats and snowmobilies. In 2003, snowcats were added. Special conditions call for special equipment. Bad weather on the lakes requires a highly trained crew and sturdy, well equipped boats as part of a Marine Unit. WCSO currently has two boats, fully outfitted for search and rescue, thanks to the generous donations of local citizens. Snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles (ATV’s and UTV’s) are used in search and rescue missions to get into snow covered areas or rugged terrain. Many searches and rescues are for missing or overdue snowmobilers, skiers, hunters and others who venture into the mountainous, snow-covered terrain of Washoe County. Many areas cannot effectively be searched by any other means. Snowmobiles can reach farther into a snow covered search area much quicker than any other means. In drier conditions, the same can be said for ATV’s. Additionally, specialized vehicles can carry much more rescue equipment into the field than one can on foot with a backpack.
